Oxygen sensor functionThe working principle of an oxygen sensor is based on the Nernst principle. Its core component is a porous ZrO2 ceramic tube, which acts as a solid-state electrolyte. At a specific temperature, due to the difference in oxygen concentration on both sides of the ceramic tube, oxygen molecules on the side with higher concentration are adsorbed onto the platinum electrode, where they combine with electrons to form oxygen ions, making that electrode positively charged. The oxygen ions then migrate through oxygen ion vacancies within the electrolyte to the side with lower oxygen concentration, making that electrode negatively charged, thus generating a potential difference. This potential difference is directly proportional to the difference in oxygen concentration between the two sides. The ECU uses this potential difference to determine the air-fuel ratio of the mixture and adjusts the fuel injection duration accordingly.
